Safer Neighbourhoods - New Non Emergency Number to contact police The national non-emergency number 101 is coming to North Yorkshire Police on 12 December 2011 and will replace the 0845 60 60 24 7 number. While 999 is a well-recognised number used to report emergencies, the 2010 British Crime Survey found that only 54% of the public knew how to contact their local police if they wanted to talk to them about policing, crime or anti-social behaviour. The introduction of the 101 number will offer the public one easy way to contact their local police force. The benefits of this new number include: Calls from landlines and mobile networks cost 15 pence per call, no matter what time of day you call or how long you are on the phone; 101 is available 24 hours a day; When you call 101, you will be able to speak to the force control room via the automated switchboard. When you call 101, we will act on the information we receive. Calling 101 will not result in your call receiving a lower priority than if you had called 999 about a non-emergency issue. |

| 12/12/11 | Safer Neighbourhoods - Crimestoppers Latest update from our link with the underworld: Since mid October 2011 - there have been 5 incidents of theft from churches whereby offenders have stolen valuable items of wooden furniture - some quite large pieces. Most of the furniture stolen has been made by ROBERT THOMPSON - THE MOUSEMAN OF KILBURN. The furniture has small carved mouse thereon - usually on a leg or side - these are the individual marks of the master carver. Location of offences have all been in rural areas - Knaresborough Rural and Craven rural. Churches being remote are often left open during the day and unattended for long periods of time. Please report any suspect incidents non emergency no 101 or if urgent 999, extra patrols are being carried out in the rural area | |

The YDNPA have chosen "Old Sports of the Yorkshire Dales" for their topic. They are currently searching for information which will form the basis of an exhibition at The Dale Countryside Museum at the time of the Olympics. The Friends of the Museum have done a lot of work and found loads of stuff, but almost all relates to Swaledale and Wensleydale. They are looking for material from other parts of the Dales and are contacting community websites and Local and Family history groups. If you have any interesting photographs, stories or equipment please contact g.b.keeble1@btinternet.com or leave a message for me at the Museum on 01969 666210. |

| 06/08/11 | Buckden wins again on the Big Lottery The Institute Committee are delighted to announce that the recent application for grant funding has been successful. The Big Lottery has awarded us a second grant of £10,000, this one to be spent over the next year on improving hall lighting and on a complete refurbishment of the toilets. If possible the lighting work, which will take about 3 days, will be undertaken before the Art Exhibition. The work on the toilets will take longer, but we hope as far as possible to be able to keep one toilet available for use at all times during the works. Work will probably commence early autumn, and will certainly be finished well before Xmas. Many thanks to John Cowpe for all his efforts in securing the funding and managing the work. Thanks too to Steve Pope for all his advice and support on the lighting scheme. | |

| 10/04/11 | Stella & Robin's walk - Stella & Robin completed their walk in the Derbyshire peak district last Sunday Stella writes: " 42 miles and 8000 feet. No blisters but aching limbs and a peculiar walk, especially down-stairs, and a sleep deficit. It took just over 16 hours. Some of the runners (yes!) can do it in half the time and a good many people do not come in until after midnight, nearly 24 hours after the start, so we did not do too badly. The weather was kind, although the first few hours were into a head wind and, for once, the bogs were sufficiently dry to hold our weight when we made injudicious leaps across water. Picture on top of Kinder Scout - click here. Many thanks to those who sponsored us in aid of the Reverb Youth Club in Kettlewell" If you still want to sponsor Stella & Robin it's not too late. Low energy light bulb recycling – as you may be aware low energy light bulbs contain a small amount of mercury and therefore should not be disposed of in your normal household waste. A national scheme has been set up to collect, and subsequently recycle, the mercury, glass and metal used in low energy light bulbs and Buckden Village Institute is proud to have signed up to the scheme. A collection box has been located just inside the village hall entrance, and all you have to do is gently drop your light bulbs (low energy ones only please) into the top of the box. Debbie Roe, as our local volunteer, will periodically empty the box and remove the contents to a collection point in Skipton. We are also looking into what schemes are available for the collection of household batteries – so watch this space. | |

| 1/11/10 | Kettlewell School Public Meeting A public meeting was held on 1st November in Kettlewell Village Hall at 6.30 p.m. A packed hall heard a totally unconvincing presentation after which many of the audience expressed their universal and strongly held opposition to the proposals. While the councillor chairing the meeting stated several times that they were listening and taking account of the views of the local people, the statements made by the representatives of the Education department, and their failure to answer effectively a number of key questions, notably about forecast numbers and the sustainability of the local community, made it clear that, as one of them actually said "the decision has been taken - now we are consulting about it". The statement made about funding for increased transport costs being the responsibility of Craven District Council and therefore not relevant to the decision, served to underline the "Alice in Wonderland" feel to the proceedings. It is essential that as many of us as possible respond formally to the consultation process, expressing our views in the strongest possible terms. Click here to download the consultation documents and other relevant material. If you would like to share your own views with the rest of the community in the upper dale please email: saveourschool@buckden.org and they will be posted on this site. | |

| 15/10/10 | The Buck - latest - We are advised by Mr David Broschomb MICBA, of Fleurets that, although he cannot divulge at what stage they are in regard to negotiations with interested parties, he can confirm that they have been encouraged by the level of interest. He can confirm that, despite all manner of rumours that may be circulating, the Buck Inn is definitely going to be reopened (with a suitable tenant) as a hostelry. It is not being sold/let for alternative use. As for the time scale, he can say that finding a long term suitable tenant takes time and research on their part, and will take as long as is needed. However he can confirm that the Buck Inn will not be closed a minute longer than is necessary. So that's OK then. | |

| 10/08/10 | Buckden Wheelers - Inaugural Ride - We have received the following communication from the Wheelers: "After consultation with various potential athletes it would seem that Fridays would suit the majority of people, therefore I would propose Friday the 20th of August 2010 as the first outing of the club. Kettlewell with its many fine hostelries is to be the venue for our first ride; for members who feel that may be a bit too far, there is the option to turn at back Starbotton. When the evenings draw in we could change to a Saturday afternoon ride, runs list to follow..... For the future I would envisage a club sweatshirt and a newsletter etc. Meeting time for the Friday ride on the 20th - 5.45 outside the Buck....." If you are planning to take part please email wheelers@buckden.org so they can organise appropriate levels of back-up support. | |

Buckden Gala - Saturday 19th June 2010. With just over a month to go until the Gala, we would be grateful for donations for the raffle, tombola, white elephant, cake and plant stalls. Donations may be left in the week running up to the Gala at the village hall or with Debbie Roe. Don’t forget the photo competition - the subject for both senior and junior (under 12 years) categories will be "My Best Photo". The competition will be limited to a maximum of 3 photographs per entrant. Photographs can be any size and should be un-mounted. This year we will also be having a small craft competition – the four classes, divided into adult and child (under 12 years), will consist of a handmade Father’s Day card, a decorated cupcake, an animal made from vegetables, and a painted pebble. Entries should be brought to the Gala field on the day, and there will be a small charge for each entry (more details next month). There will also be a ‘best-dressed potato’ competition (again split into adult and child classes) – entries can be brought on the day, or assembled at the Gala on the day. We are also investing in an additional marquee this year, so we will be able to offer a wider variety of stalls, with the benefit of more undercover tent space. So if the weather forecast is poor there is still every reason for you to come. Make sure Saturday 19 June is in your diary! |

It is hoped that a mini bus might become available but we will still require some cars. The walk will start at Ilkley and finish at Burnsall, a distance of approximately 12 miles along the River Wharfe. It would be appreciated if potential walkers could contact David and Susan Lusted (01756 760 877) ahead of the walk. There are still opportunities for ‘volunteers’ to offer to lead walks during the season – notably on Monday 12th April; we suggest something of the order of 5 to 6 miles maximum. Other Mondays as yet unclaimed are May 3rd and September 6th. There are a couple of chances to lead an ‘Evening Stroll’ – around 2 to 2.5 miles, based upon a hostelry of your choice where non-walkers could join us for a meal; the available dates are May 12th and June 9th. Volunteers for any of the slots mentioned above should contact David or Susan. We ‘Thank you’ for all your enthusiasm and support. |

Secret Ski Proposals – Latest – The report this week on the Ski Resort proposal has generated much interest and correspondence. Several villagers have written in support of the proposal – one claims even to have thought of the idea before, whilst another is planning to convert their premises into an über-cool après-ski tea-room. On the other hand, Mrs Gladys Ingleton has written to protest – I think. Click here to read her radical if somewhat tangential views. Meanwhile, it appears that all is not well in the developers’ camp – to read the fascinating if somewhat ill-tempered email exchange which has been forwarded to us by our green Austrian friend - click here . |

Village Hall Announcement - Peter Breen has had to step down as secretary to the Village Hall committee after several years because of work commitments. Peter was a very efficient and effective secretary and many of the recent improvements to the Hall and the increased use of the Hall owe a great deal to his enthusiasm and efforts. He will be a hard act to follow and his input will be missed. We thank him for all he has done for the community and are pleased that he will still be involved as a supporter of village activities and as a valued neighbour. The committee has co-opted Debbie Roe as a member and she has agreed to act as secretary until the AGM on 22 April 2009. We are pleased to announce that she has also indicated that she expects to be able to put her name forward at the AGM for formal election as secretary for the 2009/10 year. |

Lynn and Steve - would like to apologise for the size of their new tearoom signs. This is a genuine mistake on our part and we’ve tried our best to make them look a bit less obtrusive by sawing off part of the legs. We really hope people – including other businesses in the village – won’t find them too much of a nuisance and apologise if they do. We only plan to put the signs out when we are open and they will be brought in every night at 6pm. Next time we’ll be more careful. |

URGENT - VOLUNTEER NEEDED
- After many, many years of doing
it, Jimmy Sayer has asked to be replaced as the organiser of the Gala
Raffle. This involves getting the prizes (in the past mainly meals for
two at the local pubs, topped up by other bits and pieces), organising

Linda) and then getting the tickets into circulation (mainly through the
committee).
A volunteer is urgently needed to take on this key role in the Gala activities. Jimmy is happy to offer advice. Anyone who is interested should contact Christine Budd on 01943 817681. |

| 4/11/07 | H***O! Magazine - It has been pointed out by m'learned friends that there may be some confusion between www.buckden.org's "H***O! magazine feature and another celebrity magazine with a similar title and graphic design - an eventuality which strikes me as being distinctly implausible. Any similarity is, of course, entirely coincidental; however to eliminate any possibility of such confusion arising in future, the H***O! feature will now be called "ALOHA!" and our trademark red colour scheme will be replaced by royal blue.
