Local Activities & Groups
There are a variety of social and community activities/groups within the parish. These include:
Buckden Art Group
The Art Group was originally formed by a few local people who enjoyed painting and they met in the Schoolroom at Buckden. They were asked to exhibit their paintings at an event at Hubberholme Church and they have gone on from strength to strength. Members now total about 30 folk from nearby in the dale and some who travel quite a distance.
They meet in the Village Institute on Monday
evenings from 7.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m.,
between Harvest and lambing time (September to March). New members are
always welcome and demonstrations are arranged each year to encourage new
members and the more experienced alike. Each year an exhibition is held at
the
end of August. Click here for

There is a Jacob's Join supper, and since we do not have an alcohol license, why not ‘bring your own’?
A tradition has become
established whereby a Team (not necessarily the evening’s Winners) will be
selected at random (scientifically, via a numbered golf ball from a bag) to set
the questions for the
following month.

Community First Responders
The Yorkshire Ambulance Service is committed to
the highest standards
of pre-hospital care. However, given the location of Buckden, it is not
always possible to get an emergency vehicle to a patient with a potentially
life-threatening condition within the vital first few minutes.
Community First Schemes have therefore been established
under which,
local volunteers are trained and equipped by the ambulance service, to provide
emergency care before an emergency vehicle arrives. This care includes oxygen,
and defibrillation
where necessary.
There is a duty rota whereby there is a responder
on call at all times who has access to the emergency equipment
held in a central location in the village. The responders are called out to an
incident by the Ambulance Service once
the emergency vehicle has been dispatched following a 999 call.
For more information about the scheme, please contact Anne Newman on (01756) 760487 or email: annehelen.newman@btinternet.com
Volunteers are always welcome - full training is provided by Yorkshire Ambulance Service

Buckden Singers
The
group is conducted by Anne Vetch, and John
Cowpe is the accompanist.
The group sings different types of music and
following two successful concerts in Hubberholme church in July and in
Threshfield in October is now preparing for Christmas.
This
group currently has 36 members and the accent is on enjoyment. More members
would be very welcome so please do come along and see what sort of sound we can make!!! The only
qualification is enthusiasm!
If you would like any further information please ring Anne Vetch on (01756

Upper Wharfedale National Trust Volunteer Group
This group came into being in 2001 although some members had worked for the Trust previously. They meet on Wednesdays throughout the year and undertake a variety of tasks on the National Trust land. Usually it is repairing dry-stone walls, or “gapping”, but they also repair footpaths, plant trees, lead walks and help with open days. Recently they raised well over £20,000 to build the outdoor classroom/shelter in the small Garth next to Buckden car park. The Garth was opened on 18th April by BBC Weatherman Paul Hudson. Recently the group won The National Trust’s Marsh Heritage Award as the most innovative and enterprising volunteer group in the country.
