Local Activities & Groups

There are a variety of social and community activities/groups within the parish. These include:

Buckden Art Group

The Art Group was originally formed by a few local people who enjoyed painting, meeting  in the Schoolroom at Buckden. They were asked to exhibit their paintings at an event at Hubberholme Church and  have gone on from strength to strength.  Members now total about 25 folk from nearby in the dale and some who travel quite a distance. They meet in the Village Institute on Monday evenings from 7.00 p.m. to 9.00 p.m., between Harvest and lambing time (September to March). New members are always welcome and demonstrations are arranged each year to encourage new members and the more experienced alike. Each year an exhibition is held at the end of August

Buckden Village Whist Drives

A seasonal activity, running between late September and the following April, held fortnightly on Wednesday evenings in the Village Institute.  Doors open at 6.30 pm and playing commences at 7:00 pm, with a mid-evening break for a light supper.

The entry cost is £2; a raffle is held on alternate evenings.

The emphasis is on ‘playing without pressure’ – the only rule is ‘No inquests’!  We hope the mental challenge goes hand in hand with a totally friendly atmosphere.  All are welcome and absolute beginners* can be assured of a sympathetic reception.

Anyone contemplating joining, but feeling ever so slightly anxious/nervous can contact    David Lusted on (01756) 760 877  or email: info@dalegarth.co.uk.

Help … assured.  Confidence … hoped for.  Fun…guaranteed.

For Whist dates see the "What's on" page

Local poet Wilf Jowsey ("Whispering Wilf" as seen in the ITV series "The Dales") penned the following ode in praise of Buckden's Whist evenings.

Give your Wednesday a brand new twist,

Come and try the Buckden Whist.

Lots of prizes to be won,

so come along and join the fun.

You'll be leaving full of smiles,

£2.50 - it's the best value for miles!

If you believe I can't trusted,

why not check with David Lusted?

The Ladies Champion's Trophy

Buckden Village Charity Quiz Nights

A Quiz is held usually on the first Sunday of each month at the Village Hall. Doors open
at 7.00 pm; the first Question is read at 7.30 pm .

Entrance costs £2.50 per person, of which at least £1 is donated to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance Service charity. To date, this season, participant’s generosity has raised just over £400.

There is a Jacob's Join supper, and since we do not have an alcohol license, why not ‘bring your own’?

Fun is paramount; argue vociferously by all means – but the Judge’s decision is FINAL!

A tradition has become established whereby a Team (not necessarily the evening’s Winners) will be
selected at random (scientifically, via a numbered golf ball from a bag) to set the questions for the
following month.

For further information please contact either:

        Keith Portman …….. on (01756) 761 019 – or email keith@keldbarn.plus.com

For Quiz dates see the "What's on" page

Community First Responders

The Yorkshire Ambulance Service is committed to the highest standards of pre-hospital care. However, given the location of Buckden, it is not always possible to get an emergency vehicle to a patient with a potentially
life-threatening condition within the vital first few minutes.

Community First Schemes have therefore been established under which, local volunteers are trained and equipped by the ambulance service, to provide emergency care before an emergency vehicle arrives. This care includes oxygen, and defibrillation where necessary.

There is a duty rota whereby there is a responder on call at all times who has access to the emergency equipment held in a central location in the village. The responders are called out to an incident by the Ambulance Service once the emergency vehicle has been dispatched following a 999 call.

For more information about the scheme, please contact Robin Davidson on (01756) 761320

Volunteers are always welcome - full training is provided by Yorkshire Ambulance Service

Buckden Singers

The Choir rehearses on Thursdays usually term time only. Rehearsals are from 7.30 - 9.15 pm, usually in the Institute. Click here for rehearsal & performance dates

The group is conducted by Anne Vetch, and John Cowpe is the performance accompanist, whilst Peter Vetch drives ‘Reaper’ for most of our rehearsals.

We sing a wide variety of music and as a minimum each year hold two summer concerts, one in Hubberholme church and one in Threshfield both in July  and we sing at three Christmas events.

We have been on TV five times and on Radio three once. We have sung in a wide variety of venues outside and inside, near and far, in the UK and abroad.

This choir currently has some 45 members and the accent is on enjoyment. It is a community choir and no audition is necessary. The only qualification is enthusiasm and a commitment to attend regularly.

If you would like any further information go to www.buckdensingers.org or ring Anne Vetch on (01756 760882) or email anne@buckdensingers.org
