The Gala
Pronounced
"Gayler" - not "Garler", the
annual
village fete and sheep
show is always on the
afternoon of the third
Saturday in June.
The
Lofthouse & Middlesmoor
Silver Band plays
in the background. .
There
are games for children and adults
and stalls sell various merchandise from
white elephants to plants
and, of course,
home
made cakes and jams.
The Sheep Show takes place on the Gala
field with trophies and prizes presented at the
annual Gala Dinner which is held every year
in November.
Teas are served in the nearby schoolroom
and the day ends with a dance in
the Institute.
There
is a spectacular fell race during the
afternoon and every few years it is part
of
the national championship series.
The
proceeds from the Gala support the
village hall and provide a large part of the
annual cost of its upkeep.
Most
importantly it is an occasion when
nearly everyone joins together in a single
enterprise and, although it is hard work, it
is a great contribution to the
fellowship
of our small community.
The
Gala takes place annually on the third
Saturday in June
