China bans Buckden Dancers

Readers will no doubt have seen the widely reported story that the Chinese Government has banned access to the popular video sharing web-site - YouTube.

The Chinese monitor all internet web sites and identify those whose content might be considered inappropriate or corrupting to Chinese sensibilities. Access to these sites is blocked by what is generally known as The Great Firewall of China.

The Chinese Government stated "Those who provide internet video services should insist on serving the people ... and abide by the moral code of socialism," say the new guidelines. Licensed companies would be responsible for upholding national security, maintaining a healthy online environment......"

What was not widely reported was what brought about the decision to implement the ban. ALOHA! reporters have discovered that it was activities of Buckden's dancing ducklings which was the catalyst for the ban.

Interviewed by your intrepid reporter, Mr  Wang Jialin - Technical Attaché at the Chinese embassy said "We first become concern about YouTube in October when video of rambling men appear on Internet - very disturbing. We monitor closely - then in December, dancing men in dresses - this we cannot allow - they insult our moral code of socialism. So YouTube must be banned"

And the impact has been far reaching. At the Yueda Yancheng Tractor Factory in Jiangsu province, President & General Manager Mr Yin Xiang told me: "Youtube must be banned. Here at Yancheng Factory Mr Salmon Ted is  cultural icon - our young engineers look up to him and his Fordson Dexter.  We have his picture on our certificates. Our staff would be shocked to see Mr Salmon Ted in fairy dress. So, ban was very necessary"
